Google Ads or SEO: where should a local business start?

Google Ads or SEO? One is rent and one is ownership. Here’s how to decide which to lead with, and why most local businesses end up doing some of both.
Google Ads or SEO: where should a local business start?

If you want more customers finding you on Google, you have two main levers: paying for ads and earning your place through SEO. Both work. They just work differently, on different timelines.

The difference in one sentence

Google Ads is rent: you pay for every click, and your visibility stops when your spending stops. SEO is ownership: it takes longer to build, but the rankings keep working without a per-click bill.

Start with ads when…

  • You’re a new business and need calls this month, not next year.
  • Your work is seasonal and you need to show up at the right time.
  • You’re testing a new service or a new service area.
  • Your market is competitive and your organic rankings are far behind.

Start with SEO when…

  • Your monthly budget is tight and you can’t sustain ad spending.
  • You can wait a few months for results.
  • You already rank somewhere, even on page two, and need a push.
  • You have happy customers and can build up reviews.

Why most businesses end up doing both

Ads bring in calls now while SEO builds rankings you don’t pay for per click. The two also help each other: ads show you which searches actually turn into customers, and that tells you which pages and keywords are worth investing in for SEO.

Don’t skip tracking

Whatever you choose, track calls and form submissions (Google Ads has conversion tracking built in). Without tracking, you’re guessing. With it, you know what each lead cost and which efforts are worth keeping.

Setting a budget

For ads, start with a test budget for a month or two. Measure the cost per lead, then compare it to what a new customer is worth to you. If a $40 lead often turns into a $2,000 job, you have your answer. For SEO, think in months, not weeks, and look for steady progress rather than overnight jumps.

Our take
If your Google Business Profile isn’t set up and active yet, start there. It’s free, and it’s often the fastest win for a local business.
